"Refuse
To Abuse" Campaign
In 1997 the Coalition teamed up with the Seattle Mariners for an innovative public education campaign aimed at preventing domestic violence. The campaign slogan, "Refuse To Abuse,"™ plays off of the "Refuse To Lose" slogan that emerged from the Seattle Mariners' 1995 American League West Championship run. The campaign was the first effort nationally to engage credible, professional male athletes in speaking out about domestic violence.
Over the past ten years, popular Mariners players, including Jeff Fassero, Joey Cora, Carlos Guillen, and Jamie Moyer, have served as spokesmen for the campaign. In 2007, Raul Ibanez and Willie Bloomquist will lead the effort in radio and print ads featuring the "Refuse To Abuse"™ message. The ads will run throughout the Major League Baseball season.
This year the Coalition welcomes Verizon Wireless as a corporate sponsor for the campaign. Verizon Wireless is widely recognized for its HopeLine® program -- providing wireless phones with airtime to domestic violence survivors and cash grants to area domestic violence agencies. For each Mariners victory, Verizon Wireless will donate $200 to the Coalition in support of our work.
We are proud to partner with the Seattle Mariners and Verizon Wireless in our “Refuse To Abuse”™ campaign.
